The 1957-58 English Football League First Division One was won by Wolverhampton Wanderers great team of the 1950's the third time they would win the League during this era. The season was overshadowed though when travelling back from Munich Germany after a European game Sir Matt Busby's great Manchester United were involved in a plane crash. The airplane they were travelling in crashed on the runway after a refuelling stop. The crash killed 23 people including 8 united players and 3 members of staff. Among the dead was English Football prodigy Duncan Edwards. Sir Matt Busby was seriously injured and was given his last rights. What was remarkable was the makeshift United team reached the English F A Cup Final that season.

Third place Tottenham Hotspur had both Footballer of the year and leading goal scorer. 1957/58 English Football Writers Association Footballer of the year was Northern Ireland international Danny Blanchflower; Blanchflower would again win this award in 1961, one of the few players to complete this English Football Statistic. Bobby Smith was leading goal scorer hitting 38 English Division one goals.
